Roses Are Red, Shadows Are Blue
Concealed in shadows are beautiful compositions just waiting to be discovered. Single-minded photographers focused on capturing the warm tones of sunrise or sunset don’t know what they’re missing!
Let the Image Concept Drive the Editing
If you have taken one of my photo classes, you have likely heard me explain that every photograph should have a purpose. Memorable images tell a story, express a mood or emotion, or make a statement.
Finding The Sweet Spot
The idea of compromising or settling for good enough never crossed my mind. Ignorance is bliss. In retrospect, recognizing that the process and images were flawed would have been helpful.
Continuous Improvement
“I am moving from the mindset of achieving photographic perfection to one of enjoying the creative process.” - Steve
Six Questions To Ask Before Purchasing Workplace Artwork
Beach Patterns 23030SND850C_5x4 - Weather leaves patterns in the sand as beach grass migrates up the sandy slopes, South Beach, Newport, Oregon, USA.
Expressing Myself
My ultimate goal is not to mimic the techniques or the best practices of these masters. On the contrary, my hope is I can become an expressive photographer of merit by studying and learning from their experiences and insights.
Faces Appeared!
“As I began the editing process the feeling of symmetrical tranquility was derailed. Closer inspection of the merged image reveal faces! Yea, faces right down the center of the photo.”
Spotlighting
I crossed the bridge and it immediately caught my eye. It was partially obscured by old down and leaning snags. I step over wet logs, went under low hanging branches and wiggled my way through the thicket to stand in front of it. It was fantastic! It was just what I was looking for.
Trees of Cherry Hinton Hall Park Plus
“One May evening I walked a portion of the park with others. A stroll along the network of quaint walkways leading from tree to tree is a perfect way to end, or begin a day. I was so delighted with the beautiful old trees I returned the next morning at sunrise to take photographs.”
Case Study: A Vote For Lightroom
Like most things worth learning, LR does require a concentrated effort to maximize its potential. How quickly you learn depends on your level of interest and your willingness to practice regularly.
Three Fingered Jack Excursion: The Experience
We left Bend at 3:00 am. We arrived at Jack Lake trailhead at 4:15 am. Civil twilight would happen at 5:32 am and sunrise would follow at 6:05 am. With headlamps lighting the path, and gear laden backpacks serving as required ballast, we hiked the gradual uphill trail. Our photo objective was to capture wildflowers at sunrise in the Canyon Creek Meadow area on the Northeast slope of the mountain.
Chasing Optimal Experience, Flow
The truth is this whole exercise is a way to give myself permission to think and work outside my current creative box.
Focused On The Details
“I was determined not to make the same mistake twice. I checked my focus, then check again and checked once more.”
A Postmortem: Almost But Not Quite The Perfect Capture
“I thought I was walking away with a pretty special photograph, perhaps even a portfolio image. But I made some elementary errors that would render the image unworthy.”
In Search of Redwoods & Rhododendrons
“I would be too late to capture spring flowers and too early to capture fall color. Nonetheless I was eager to explore the natural beauty. I zig zagged down the trail. I saw a lone, thin branched tree with bright yellow leaves. Just enough sun was filtering through the canopy to light up the leaves. This is one of my most favorite photos of the trip.”
