Workshop Overview
This is a 6-hour nature and landscape photography workshop led by pro photographer and outdoor guide Steve J. Giardini. We will meet at the historic Dee Wright Observatory on the top of McKenzie Pass west of Sisters, Oregon. After introductions and an exploration of the observatory, we will begin the drive down the west side of the pass to capture autumn colors and beautiful waterfalls photos. The itinerary will include a visit to Scott Lake, Koosha Falls, and a walk along the McKenzie River to Sahalie Falls. The final stop will be a sunset opportunity at the top of the Santiam Pass near the trailhead of the Pacific Crest Trail.
All levels are welcome. This is an interactive workshop. Expect instruction and coaching to match your knowledge and skill level. Expect to be challenged without being intimidated.
Maximum Group Size: Five (5)
Workshop Cost: $400 per person
The workshop fee covers professional photographer instruction and coaching. It does not cover transportation, meals, lodging, or other related expenses. We suggest lodging in Sisters or Bend, Oregon. Participants must drive their own vehicle.
Workshop Dates & Times
October 21, 2023 - The workshop starting point is the Dee Wright Observatory at the top of McKenzie Pass.
Planned stops include; Scott Lake, Koosha Falls, McKenzie Riverwalk, Sahalie Falls, and along the Santiam Pass.
Experience Level: All skill levels are welcome!
Participants should have a working knowledge and understanding of basic camera controls. Contact us if you have questions.
Workshop Itinerary
October 21, 2023, Saturday
Times Location
11:30 am - Meet at the Dee Wright Observatory, a historic stone-built observation structure at the top of McKenzie Pass. Suggest you bring a packed lunch and snacks.
12:30 pm - Drive to Scott Lake for views of Middle & North Sister mountains across a small forest-ringed lake.
2-4 pm - Drive to Koosha Falls for quintessential Oregon waterfall images. A 2-mile round trip walk/hike along the McKenzie River to Sahalie Falls. The hike is considered easy by most. Contact us about alternatives to the walk/hike portion.
5-6:30 pm - Drive to the top of Santiam Pass for sunset views of Mount Washington. Plus a few roadside stops for additional mountain and Shuttle Lake views.
7:30 pm - We suggest a fun, no-host group dinner in Sisters to talk about the day’s event.
Note: The itinerary may be modified depending on weather conditions.
Physical Requirements: Most locations will require short walks some with uneven paths or trails. There is one 2-mile round-trip trail walk with a slight incline in one direction.
Required Camera Equipment: Participants must have a digital camera with interchangeable lens capability and a tripod. If you have a camera but it does not meet these requirements, please feel free to contact us to discuss options.
Other Suggested Gear: Bring clothing for every possible weather condition. This should include light gloves, hiking-style boots, sunglasses, sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, 20 oz water & snacks.

Photo Workshop Indemnity Waiver
All participants must sign a standard indemnity waiver. A waiver form with be sent to you following registration. You may send us a photo of the signed form via email before the workshop or present it at the workshop. Thank you.

If you traveling to the workshop from a distant location, we strongly recommend that you obtain travel/cancellation insurance.
Camera equipment insurance is always encouraged.
